TAKE ACTION ALERT!
As Legislative Affairs Chair for the Halifax Area Chapter, I want to take a moment to highlight one of the most important aspects of our mission: protecting and advancing the earned benefits of our veteran community—wherever they may be.
This page is dedicated to keeping you informed and engaged on the legislative issues that directly impact veterans, active-duty service members, retirees, and their families.
What Does “Take Action” Mean?
From time to time, you may receive an email asking you to “Take Action.”
Taking action is simple—but powerful.
It means:
- Clicking on the link provided in the email
- Reviewing the issue
- Sending a pre-drafted message to your members of Congress
In just a few minutes, you can help influence national policy and ensure that the voices of our military community are heard.
Why Your Voice Matters
Our organization of the Military Officers Association of America advocates on behalf of the uniformed services community—but real impact happens when individual members speak up.
When lawmakers hear directly from constituents, it reinforces the urgency and importance of these issues. Your participation strengthens our collective voice.
Advocacy in Action (AIA)
Each year, we participate in Advocacy in Action (AIA) in Washington, D.C., typically held in April.
During this event:
- Representatives from across the country meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill
- We advocate directly for legislative priorities affecting our community
- We ensure that the needs of veterans and service members remain front and center
As your Legislative Affairs Chair, I am proud to represent our chapter on the Hill and advocate on your behalf.
Stay Informed. Stay Engaged.
- Legislative priorities may be shared throughout the year via email
- Some priorities are part of an annual coordinated effort
- Others arise as urgent issues requiring immediate attention
It takes all of us working together to make a difference.

Final Thought
When you receive that email asking you to take action—please take a moment to respond.
It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways you can support the entire military and veteran community.

Urgent — take action
Military Spouse Hiring Act — Work Opportunity Tax Credit
Military spouses face a persistent 21% unemployment rate — the highest of any group tracked by DoD. Adding military spouses as a target group under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) would incentivize businesses to hire them. Congress used the same strategy to combat veteran unemployment. It’s time to do the same for spouses.

Major Richard Star Act — end the “wounded veteran tax”
Combat-injured veterans lose a dollar of earned military retirement pay for every dollar of VA disability compensation they receive. The Major Richard Star Act would end this unjust offset. The House bill has 317+ cosponsors. Senate action is still needed.
